Tracking our energy usage

Many things are important to us: making people laugh, doing work we can be proud of, growing our business, all that jazz – and also things like our environmental impact as a company.

On that front, we’re starting to track our energy usage more closely. We’ll also be reporting back – both internally and in public – on what we learn to see if we can become more energy-efficient over time.

So here’s a starter for 10: during March 2017, we used, on average, ~15kWh of electricity and ~12.5kWh of gas per day in our Bristol HQ. (Full disclosure: this is a slight approximation, as we share our building and bills with a couple of other companies). This doesn’t take into account energy used out and about on shoots and so on, but it does give a sense of the day-to-day energy overheads for running the business.

Gas usage

As you can see, the electricity usage is pretty flat month-to-month (probably because we drink the same amount of tea all year round). But the gas usage for the month is way down compared with January and February – most likely because, thankfully, the need for heating becomes a little less pressing as the weather gets warmer!

In terms of improving on this, we already get our electricity from 97% renewable sources. And we’ll keep tracking our usage over time and figure out if there are things we can do to bring it down or make it more efficient. Watch this space to see how we do…
