Don’t get me wrong, I like the other 17 million viewers on YouTube loved this ad!
At a time when everyone has dismissed advertising as anachronistic, Nike reminded us of how to do it by making a showstopper that has left other brands and advertisers gawping at their audacity and ambition.
But there’s a worrying pattern beginning to emerge – nearly all of the uber-star players featured have had an utter shocker in South Africa (and two never even made it).
Drogba – broke his arm and Ivory Coast now looking unlikely to qualify for the knockout stages
Rooney – Having a desperately underwhelming competition so far
Ribery – French, enough said
Cannavaro – On his way home
Tiago Silva – Yet to play a game for Brazil
Ronaldinho – Never even made the Brazilian squad
Ronaldo – Pretty quiet by his standards
Iniesta, Fabregas & Pique – Spain, the clear favourites two weeks ago, are by no means guaranteed to get out of their group
And blink and you’ll miss it [49 seconds] Theo Walcott being marked by Patrice Evra – whoops.
…Hell even Roger Federer has been having a tough time of it at Wimbledon this week!
I still love this ad, but call me superstitious should Wayne choke on Sunday we may well be pointing the finger at Nike.
