How can your money make an impact on Climate Change?

Bought the reusable cup, the bamboo toothbrush and joined Extinction Rebellion but still frustrated by the lack of change?

Your money is powerful. Where you leave it and how you invest it can have a positive impact on fighting the climate crisis. Here are four ways in which you can use your money (big or small) to bring around robust change.

1 Move your pension

Your pension could be investing in the fossil fuel industry and other insidious and toxic organisations and practices. There is an estimated £3 Billion in pension funds invested in unethical companies and practices.

Changing your pension to an ethical fund will ensure your money is going towards building clean energy infrastructure, planting trees and green transport. Moving your pension can be 27 times more sustainable than turning vegan and giving up flying combined! Find out more at Make My Money Matter here.

2 Switch your bank

The money in your bank is pumped into harmful industries such as fossil fuels. Thankfully there are plenty of options for ethical banking ensuring that your money is being used for good and matching your morals.

We recommend our friends at Triodos Bank who have given £7 billion to projects benefitting people and planet, including schemes to NGOs, Green energy infrastructure and even hospitals in the UK. Check out some of the projects which Triodos have supported here.

3 Support green reforestation

Forests feed on CO2 emissions and release them back out into the world as oxygen. Amazing right? Unfortunately, even after the fires in the Amazon, deforestation is accelerating and reducing our natures fight back against greenhouse gas emissions.

According to The Nature Conservancy restoring nature and putting an end to deforestation could remove 7 billion tons of CO2 annually, the equivalent to the emissions of 1.5 billion cars.

Want to help nature fight back? Check out this map of forest regeneration projects to see where you can get involved.

4 Vote with your wallet!

Your money holds power over corporations. And as the world’s top 100 companies are responsible for 70% of global emissions, your money can have an active role in reducing our reliance on businesses which cause negative environmental impacts and instead seek out those who strive to empower the vision of a better future.

We recommend Ethical Consumer as an excellent guide to making informed choices on what to spend our money on, from car manufacturers to washing machines you will be able to find the most conscious choice.

We are all in this together. Any contribution to decreasing our carbon footprints is worthwhile. What bold actions are you taking in the fight against the Climate Crisis? Let us know by tweeting at us @Rubber_Republic
