Reddit Mondays: #2 – Speak the language.

Tiffany Maddox

Most online forums, groups and communities have their own methods of communication. Little memes, in-jokes and acronyms that can be intimidating to the outside user, but hey, that’s pretty much the whole Internet.

Reddit is no different. So here’s a handy guide to keep you out of trouble.

OP
Means ‘original poster’ E.g. the person who started the thread. In most cases, the OP will be flamed for existing or posting anything in the first place. Also worth noting that sometimes the OP will promise something (E.g. pictures) and this will usually spark a flood of ‘OP will surely deliver’ memes.

tl;dr

Too long, didn’t read. Used to summarise a huge wall of text. Also used as a troll response to someone who’s waffling on about something without getting to the point.

TIL

Today I learned. A sub on Reddit where (sometimes) interesting facts are posted. See here for more.

Derp

Used to signify stupidity. E.g. Herp derp hurrr.

The Narwhal Bacons at Midnight

Phrase used in public or outside of Reddit that can be used to identify yourself as a Redditor.

This.

Used to agree with someone or something. Usually written  as a stand alone statement. (Then usually accompanied with a barrage of downvotes.)

AMA

Great subreddit where interesting people answer questions from the community. Notable AMAs include Barack Obama, Bill Gates and Astronaut Chris Hadfield (who did it from space, like a boss).

So, hopefully that helps you on your way. Next week I’ll be sharing some of my most favourite (clean) Subreddits with you and talking about customising your Reddit experience.

Reddit Mondays: #1 – WTF is it?

Tiffany Maddox

Reddit is here to stay, so we’d better all get used to it. Alright?

For the next few Mondays we’ll be having a chat about all things Reddit, in an attempt to make the (often quite intimidating) site into something all together more user friendly and cuddly.

Below are the top 4 most frequently asked questions that I’m asked by non Reddit users.

1) So…What is Reddit anyway?

Remember Digg? It’s sort of a bit like that, but bigger and better and thriving as a community. Digg on the other hand?… Not so much. It’s a place to find relevant interests, no matter how niche, and chat to other likeminded weirdos from all over the Internet. Got an interest that’s a bit odd? Reddit probably has you covered, bro.

The site is made up of subreddits which act as small communities in themselves. When you first sign up to the site, Reddit will automatically subscribe you to a bunch of these popular subreddits. These are pretty broad categories like funny, pics, and WTF, but you can unsubscribe to them if you want and build a page that’s more tailored to your interests.

2) How do I find stuff I like?

To be fair, there are thousands of subreddits and it’s easy to become paralysed by choice, so the best thing to do is go here and search by interest. Also you’ll find links to certain subs in comment threads, so make sure you check them out and subscribe if you find something interesting.

3) I HAVE NO IDEA WHAT’S GOING ON!?!?111!

It’s cool. Don’t worry. It’s a bit confusing at first.

Reddit is community curated. Which means that if you only lurk around the top half of the front page you’re only going to see what’s popular at that moment. This is because the community upvotes or downvotes the post based on interest/relevance. Upvotes are for when you like something and downvotes…? Yeah, you get the picture.

This also goes for comments. When you click ‘view comments’ under a link, the first post you see will be the most upvoted comment in that thread. Under that (usually slightly to the right) will be replies to that comment. These will have been curated too, according to upvotes, so you don’t have to read some wasteman’s opinion on a cat video. Instead you can just skip to the witty puns.

It is a little strange at first, but you’ll get used to it. Just make sure you practice by installing a Reddit app on your phone and then obsessively checking it every 12 minutes.

4) I submitted a link, it’s not immediately gone viral and someone called me a rude name :(

That usually happens with your first post. It’s not your fault. You just weren’t prepared. In 2012 30 million posts were submitted to the site, so if your hilarious piece of viral content didn’t make it to the front page, don’t be sad. It happens.

The best advice I can give you is to lurk more, develop a thick skin, and be prepared for even the most flawless posts to be flamed into oblivion.

Next week we’ll be chatting about the language of Reddit, and how to go native.

5 Friday Favourites

Guest Blogger

Hi. It’s Jess checking in for my last blog this week.

Spending time with Rubber Republic has been a great experience and has given me a real insight into their process of making creative viral content for client brands. I’ve really noticed that Rubber Republic work hard to make the content they create fun and engaging and they certainly know what works and what doesn’t in the digital sphere. Contributing to this blog has been a great opportunity to share what I find interesting on the internet too. Thanks Rubber Republic!

For your weekend viewing I’ve selected some of my favourite viral videos which are stupid, funny or feature J-Timberlake.

1) The aptly named ‘Dramatic Chipmunk’ is possibly THE most dramatic 5 seconds in internet history.

2) Fenton! Fenntonnn!! A dog on the loose in Richmond Park with a very irritated owner.

3) Viral marketing at its best. The Blendtec Total Blender can blend anything. Your iPad isn’t safe.

4) From 2008, this gem from Saturday Night Live has clocked up over 39,000,000 views on YouTube with Justin Timberlake taking centre stage.

5) Epic Meal Time. Just some regular guys cooking up some American favourites using copious amounts of bacon and fast food. Jamie Oliver’s worst nightmare.

And one more…

This is a classic example of why celebrities are dangerous to the rest of mankind and (why Hugh Grant in particular) shouldn’t get behind the wheel.

Coca-Cola: Happiness without Borders

Guest Blogger

Coca-Cola equals happiness. Fact. From the Coca-Cola Christmas ads of the 90s to the recent ‘Sharing Can’ ad campaign, Coca-Cola has always provided an antidote to our modern day woes.

Rubber Republic’s viral cravings are curbed by this Coca-Cola ad from 2012, which encourages us to look at the world a little differently.

More recently, Coca-Cola have combined their brand ethos and innovation in product design to create the ‘Sharing Can’ ad which shows us sharing IS caring.

Midweek Meow.

Guest Blogger

I’m Jess and I’m taking over the Rubber Republic blog whilst here on work experience this week.

Of all the sophistiCATS Rubber Republic are familiar with, Choupette Lagerfeld (the feline friend of Chanel designer Karl Lagerfeld) has to be our favourite. With a lifestyle most normal people aspire to; personal maids, regular table setting next to Lagerfeld, it is Choupette’s pervasive online presence which sets her apart from other members of the animal community.

Choupette’s Twitter following of 28,316 gives her online personality widespread exposure, with Choupette tweeting moral questions such as ‘Is it time to forgive & forget John Galliano’s transgressions?’ and providing important social commentary, ‘Did @KimKardashian take a nod from The Sound of Music last night and stitch her MetGala dress from curtains?’ MEOW.

Rubber Republic are particularly impressed with Choupette’s skill with the iPad. While many struggle with touch-screen technology, Choupette is clearly at ease and is reportedly a fan of Delib’s Budget Simulator.

Choupette’s small size gives her the edge when it comes to gaining access to the most exclusive shoots and events, seemingly being everywhere and nowhere at the same time.
