Don’t get me wrong, I like the other 17 million viewers on YouTube loved this ad!
At a time when everyone has dismissed advertising as anachronistic, Nike reminded us of how to do it by making a showstopper that has left other brands and advertisers gawping at their audacity and ambition.
But there’s a worrying pattern beginning to emerge – nearly all of the uber-star players featured have had an utter shocker in South Africa (and two never even made it).
Drogba – broke his arm and Ivory Coast now looking unlikely to qualify for the knockout stages
Rooney - Having a desperately underwhelming competition so far
Ribery – French, enough said
Cannavaro – On his way home
Tiago Silva – Yet to play a game for Brazil
Ronaldinho – Never even made the Brazilian squad
Ronaldo – Pretty quiet by his standards
Iniesta, Fabregas & Pique - Spain, the clear favourites two weeks ago, are by no means guaranteed to get out of their group

And blink and you’ll miss it [49 seconds] Theo Walcott being marked by Patrice Evra – whoops.
…Hell even Roger Federer has been having a tough time of it at Wimbledon this week!
I still love this ad, but call me superstitious should Wayne choke on Sunday we may well be pointing the finger at Nike.

Love this. Pique was also a bit poop against the Swiss and has taken a physical battering in the process! http://g.sports.yahoo.com/soccer/world-cup/blog/dirty-tackle/post/Gerard-Pique-is-having-a-very-bloody-World-Cup?urn=sow,250227
As a Gooner I’d have to say Fabregas being benched/Theo Walcott left at home are the real shockers.
+ Iniesta’s been injured!
Well spotted, I think that this is a recurring problem of non-performing or even non-attending sports stars. So it’s a long running curse.
But as we are supposed to be impressed into buying due to the sports stars prowess this ought to be a real own goal, significant enough to make them re-think their sponsorship and advertising.
Oh what the hell, it’s only a game.
Good observation. My tip for the WC is Brazil at the moment. That none of their star players appear in this ad (Ronnie’s at home) only serves to strengthen my resolve to back ‘em at the bookies.
Yeah, Gilberto/Ramires/Melo are playing very well, partly because they are limited players. Makes you wonder just why Lampard/Gerrard/Barry don’t play well, not least because they aren’t in any true system but as they aren’t prepared to do what they do.
Brazil always outplay Argentina so I think it’s down to Spain to stop them, if Spain don’t mess it up against Portugal.
